So let’s understand “WHAT IS DESIGN”

Design is process in which we create a product by understanding the needs and wants of consumer.

We can also say that design is a visual look given to a certain object by doing a research which feels safe and excites the customer.

From designer’s point of view, Here are some points you need to remember-

1.When we create a design we should keep users perspective in our mind not what we like.

2. Product should be designed in a manner that it looks beautiful.

3. But only looks doesn’t matter design always has to serve a purpose.

4. Emotions play very important role in design.

5. Research is a very important part of design, knowing what society want helps very much.

DESIGN FROM MY VIEW -

So basically I was from marketing and sales background so the way I look any product is very different compared to designer’s view.

When marketing or sales person gets a product they find more good points in the product because it helps in sales as they have to deal with the consumer.

They always showcase 90% good side of the product.

But nothing is perfect and also the product ,so when a designer makes a product they have to keep all principles in mind and then they start developing it.

Design is a very big field and everybody atleast should have some knowledge about how to judge a product whether it is a good product or a bad product design.

Here are some examples of good product design-

  1. CYLINDER HOLDER-

So this is one of the best product design. As shown in above picture we just place cylinder on it and can move it wherever we want as it has wheels. This is helpful because cylinder is very heavy so many people have back problems and other injuries so they can’t pick it up and place it and it also helps in keeping floor clean, sometimes when a cylinder is placed for a long time at same place it leaves red marks on floor the holder helps in this case also.So this is a beautifully designed product.

2. CLOTHES HANGER/ KEY HANGER-

I’m 100% sure this product is used in every house. It is designed beautifully it serves it purpose and also keeps your room clean as you just hang your clothes here rather then throwing them on bed or sofa. When next time you want your clothes or keys you know where are they.

3. USB CABLES-

This product is the most used product I guess. It has several purposes and is designed in a way that you can carry it anywhere, you can keep this in your pocket, you bag wherever you want. It helps in charging phones , transferring data form mobiles to laptop and other stuff and also helps in playing songs in a car. So all these products shown above they looks fine , they serve the purpose perfectly, are easy to use and the price is also very low if you want to buy them.

So the customer will absolutely be satisfied by these.

Some examples of bad product design-

  1. Trimmer box-

As we all know trimmer is a very useful gadget. But the problem is with the box when I opened the box I’m unable to close it properly and because of that the dust enters in the box and sometimes trimmer creates problems as it stops or starts making noise.

2. HEADPHONES-

This product might look perfect to you but it is not because I can’t set size according to my head. So whenever I wear them it just keeps falling. So in this case you should give some instructions or can set an age limit or make the upper side flexible so it will help the consumers and will give better experience.

3. TELEVISION REMOTE-

This product design might look perfect to you but it is not. We can see the numbers of button but 90% of us don’t know what’s the use of all of it. We are comfortable with it because we don’t want to use any other button but only those which we are familiar with.

So the examples shown above are unable to serve the purpose properly.

How to decide the product is good or bad-

So there are ten principles given by DIETER RAMS.

They are very useful and most of the companies use these principles.

Here is the link to “Dieter Rams: Ten Principles for Good Design”

At last I just want to say that design is everywhere and opinions may differ but you just have to do your best and learn from every single person..
